Amazing website, good details for Kauai and wheelchair accessible information. Best and Thanks! - Viktor Berg

Thanks sooo much for the web page. I'm visiting Kauai Nov. 16-Dec.2, with my sister who is disabled and your site was very helpful.
Thanks for all your research & hard work. - Barb Iverson

Hi, Thank you so much for this very informative site!!! As the saying goes, "A picture says a thousand words"; your picture examples of the parking area in relation to the beach, shade and facilities are supurb!!

I have found your site quite useful for planning our vacation on Kauai in October with my two >80 year old parents. Walking and stairs are very difficult for Mom (LOVE the long paved beach side paths!!!) and have taken note of the dining options for the North side (we are staying in Princeville).

Again, Thank you so much for pulling this extremely useful guide!! We SO look forward to fufilling our lifelong dream of visiting the Garden Isle and your site has helped immensely with our planning!!

Sincerely,
Pam

July 19, 2010 - My husband and I honeymooned in Kauai last year, it was a huge struggle to call all the places to find out which were willing to take us. I think I spent about 8 hours on the phone. Some places would require us to visit in person for them to gauge my abilities. I have muscular dystrophy and use two leg braces to walk. We were able to do the following: Kipu Ranch - I rode as a passenger in Rhino. No problems except needed assistance to go to woods because I drank a lot of water; we went to Island Helicopters and they were very helpful. Only problem was that I needed to go inside which required climbing 6 steps. This was needed to weigh each passenger. I was able to get in with assistance - I used a gait belt (posey) which made a huge difference; I went on the tube ride which required climbing into the back of a tall 4x4 vehicle. The staff was very helpful. Getting into the water required going down a very steep muddy and slippery bank. I was able to navigate with help from husband. I was able to ride a horse, it required climbing up mounting block (3 steps). I used the posey belt again. I went on Captain Andy's boat, but the bathroom was down a ladder. Next time we will use the boat company that has a bathroom on the same deck. The farmer's market was not accessible, my scooter could not navigate due to the large rock/gravel ground cover. We went on the river tour to the cave, but I could not get in and out of the boat easily nor could I walk up the steep slope. I was not able to bring my scooter on board. If you go to Smith's Luau, bring a chair or scooter as there is a lot of walking. I was not able to get on the tram tour due to stepping up. We were able to shop at Coconut Market, we were able to go to most restaurants.

Aug. 5 2010 - Just got back from Kauai and wanted to pass on some information that might help others. As far as accomodation - I rented unit 201 (2bdm) in the Sunset Kahili condos in Poipu (www.ourkauaicondo.com), which was wheelchair accessible for me. the master bath had a roll-in shower and grab bars by the toilet and shower. The door to the toilet was hinged to swing out and was wide enough to get my wheelchair through - it was about a 30 in doorway. The owner had a shower seat available that was stored in the master batch closet. There was an elevator for the unit, tho this level could also be walked to from the sidewalk - no stairs. The kitchen was a bit small for a wheelchair - if I was in the kitchen, no one else could get by. But it was ok as I didn't want to do much in the kitchen. It was a great place to stay if you're in a wheelchair and can put up with a few inconveniences (small kitchen, a bit tight in the bathroom but doable (can't get under the bathroom sink as it has a vanity)).
